Once you have thought of something you wish to make, do a search of the internet to see if anyone else has designed this already, or made something similar which you could alter to suit your specifications.
Take lots of measurements of object you are trying to recreate, or the space a new object must fit into. Take many pictures, and have them opened on your computer.
If possible have the object on the table beside while you are trying to design it, because working from memory may be more difficult than you think.
